From student visa to PR: the realistic sequence

The student-to-PR route is real and thousands of people complete it every year. It also has the highest failure rate, because it is the route where doing nothing feels like progress.

The sequence that works

• While studying: check that your intended occupation is on a current occupation list and identify its assessing authority.
• While studying: meet the Australian study requirement (two academic years) and consider regional study for an extra 5 points.
• Final semester: sit an English test. Aim for Superior, not the minimum.
• Within 6 months of completing: lodge your subclass 485.
• Month 1 of the 485: start your skills assessment. Do not wait.
• Months 1 to 24: get skilled work in your nominated occupation. Any job pays rent; only skilled work earns points.
• Throughout: monitor state nomination programs, which open and close unpredictably.

The age trap

The 485 age limit was cut to under 35 for most applicants, and age is assessed at the date the Department receives your application - not when you graduate, not when your testamur is issued. If you are close to 35, apply the moment you are eligible.

Why "any job" is not enough

Skilled employment points require work in your nominated occupation or a closely related one, at least 20 hours a week, paid. Two years driving for a delivery app scores zero points and does nothing for a state nomination application. This is the most common way a 485 gets wasted.

What to do if the 485 is running out

Options narrow but do not disappear: employer sponsorship through a 482, a second qualification, regional nomination, or a partner visa if applicable. All of them are easier to arrange at month 18 than month 34.
