The regional pathway: 15 points and what it costs you
Regional does not mean remote. For a lot of applicants it is the difference between waiting forever and being invited.
Regional migration is the part of the system most people dismiss before checking what it means. It is worth checking.
What counts as regional
For skilled visa purposes, designated regional Australia is everywhere except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Newcastle and Wollongong are all regional. So the choice is often between two large cities, not between a city and a farm.
The trade
You gain 15 points immediately. In exchange you accept a provisional visa, a commitment to live and work in the region, and a three-year wait before you can apply for the permanent subclass 191. You also accept the risk that changing circumstances make the region unworkable.
The competition is tightening
The 2026-27 Migration Program cut subclass 491 places from 33,000 to 14,110 - a 57% reduction. Regional nomination is no longer the soft option it was a few years ago. If you are planning around it, plan properly: target specific states, check their occupation lists, and consider whether a regional job offer strengthens your case.
Protect the conversion
The 191 is not a formality - it is an evidence exercise. From your first day on a 491, keep leases, payslips, employment contracts and utility bills, and lodge a tax return every year. You will need ATO Notices of Assessment for at least three income years.
Registered migration agents
We are building a directory of MARN-registered agents and immigration lawyers. Listings are checked against the public register before they appear.
How the directory worksPlacement shown on guide pages.
